In this brownbag presentation, Professor Taoufik Ben Amor, head of Columbia’s Arabic language program, will present his efforts to revitalize Arabic grammar instruction for English speakers and discuss the place of grammar in the language curriculum more generally. Light refreshments will be provided.
Professor Ben Amor has shared the following introduction:
Positions on the place of grammar in the language curriculum have been swinging back and forth for decades: prescriptive or descriptive, form or function, inductive or deductive, etc. This talk argues that form and function go hand in hand and proposes an integrated approach to teaching and learning grammar inside and outside of the classroom.
