The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) will award a limited number of grants for private language training in Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) at the intermediate or advanced levels, with an emphasis on business vocabulary.  LCTLs include all languages other than English and the commonly taught European languages of French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Grants are awarded for Language Maintenance Tutorials through Columbia’s Language Resource Center and will cover 10 flexible 90-minute private sessions.
 

  • Grant Specifications
    Grants will be awarded for language study meeting two criteria:
    It is in a language other than English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and it is at a level or in a specialization not available at Columbia University.
    The grant is only open to full-time, masters-level Business School and SIPA students. PhD students are not eligible.  Applicants must have at least 2 years background in the language.
  • How to Apply
    Complete applications consist of 1) your resume; and 2) a one-page proposal describing your need for this language study.  In your proposal, please include the following:
    Previous language training and proficiency levels.
    Your career plans and how this specific language skill fits in.
    What language options you have explored on or off-campus and why they do not meet your needs.
    To apply, submit your resume and proposal to Karey Fuhs at ciber@columbia.edu by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21. Notifications will be sent via e-mail no later than Wednesday, September 23. About the CIBER-Language Resource Center Individualized Study Grant

The CIBER-LRC grant aims to help meet students’ specialized language study needs with an eye toward business career aspirations. Students are selected by CIBER on the basis of their application and are matched with a suitable tutor for Language Maintenance Tutorials through Columbia’s Language Resource Center.  Language Maintenance Tutorials are designed primarily to meet the needs of Columbia's graduate and professional school students. Tutorials are led by trained Columbia graduate students with experience teaching a variety of levels. Languages and specializations vary by semester.
