SUMMARY:LRC Instructional Innovation Grant Presentation: Ling Yan and Yike Li\, EALAC
DESCRIPTION:**Please note: this event was originally scheduled for Wed. April 24th\, and has been rescheduled for Friday\, April 26th. \nPlease join us for an LRC Instructional Innovation Grant Presentation\, Gra by Dr. Ling Yan and Yike Li\, from EALAC. For a description of the project\, please read the following: \n“Chinese is a tonal language\, which means that the tone in which syllables in a word are pronounced can change that word’s meaning. There are four main tones in Mandarin Chinese\, as well as a neutral tone\, which is used for some syllables. One of the main difficulties in learning Chinese tones is the fact that they are used to distinguish between similar-sounding words. For example\, the word “ma” can mean “mother\,” “horse\,” “hemp\,” or “scold\,” depending on the tone used and character chosen. This can be confusing for learners who are used to relying on other cues\, such as word order or context\, to determine meaning. Another challenge is that the tones themselves can be difficult to produce correctly. Learners may not be accustomed to using their voices in precise ways at the lexical level\, which can result in miscommunication or difficulty being understood. This project provides students with instructions on how to pronounce Chinese syllables which consist of tones\, initials (the initial consonant)\, and finals (the vowel or diphthong that follows the initial) through visual and audio demonstrations in video clips. By using clear\, real-life examples and step-by-step explanations\, the video clips are easy to follow and understand.”

SUMMARY:LRC Grant Project Presentations (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:Supplementing Classroom Input for Intermediate Chinese Learners\nAuthors: Shaoyan Qi & Yike Li\nAffiliation: East Asian Languages and Cultures Department \nSummary:\nInput is paramount to language acquisition (Gass & Mackey\, 2015). Without primary linguistic data available to learners within their environment\, the initiation of language learning is infeasible. In foreign language contexts where L2 input is limited\, textbooks often serve as the predominant source of this essential input (Tomlinson\, 2012; Ur\, 1996). However\, relying solely on textbooks is insufficient. Numerous language educators have turned to the internet in search of high-quality input to enhance classroom learning experiences. \nA challenge emerges when many of these online materials aren’t directly transferable to classroom instruction\, particularly for beginner and intermediate learners. The primary objective of this project is the development of a corpus of supplemental input materials. These can be audio-visual or text-based\, tailored for the first five chapters (approximately one-third of the textbook) of the Second-Year Chinese class. Concurrently\, the project endeavors to pioneer a systematic approach for the creation or modification of input materials. This approach would ensure the content adheres to four core criteria for premium quality input: comprehensibility\, authenticity\, appropriateness\, and representativeness. \nGiven the project’s success\, our intention is to replicate the same methodology\, creating additional supplemental materials for the entirety of the textbook.

SUMMARY:Designing Multiliteracies Tasks for Heritage Learners of Korean
DESCRIPTION:Designing Multiliteracies Tasks for Heritage Learners of Korean\nAuthors: Ji-Young Jung & Eunice Chung\nAffiliation: East Asian Languages and Cultures Department \nSummary:\nThe objective of this project is to develop multimodal materials and tasks for heritage learners of Korean within the framework of multiliteracies. Heritage learners’ linguistic and cultural abilities differ from non-heritage learners. Most heritage learners come to class with prior exposure to the target language and culture. As a result\, they often exhibit higher proficiency in aural/oral skills compared to their literacy skills. \nOf significant note\, the motivations of heritage learners differ greatly from non-heritage learners. Research in the field of heritage language learning has consistently shown that the motivations and learning experiences of heritage learners are deeply intertwined with identity issues (e.g.\, He\, 2006; 2010). A majority of our heritage Korean students at Columbia not only pursue Korean studies to enhance communication with their families but also to delve deeper and connect with their heritage by enriching their knowledge of the Korean language and culture. \nIn this backdrop\, utilizing a multiliteracies approach proves to be especially beneficial in catering to the diverse needs and motivations of heritage learners. Multiliteracies encompass a wide range of multimodal materials\, aiding learners in comprehending how media influences and alters their perceptions\, alongside fundamental linguistic conversations. \nWith the aid of meticulously curated materials and scaffolded activities\, our aim is to immerse students in the analysis\, evaluation\, and application of the multimodal texts they encounter\, all through a discerning perspective. Motivating learners to interpret and create meanings through a critical viewpoint will enable us to sidestep predominant cultural norms and customs\, which often get unconsciously embedded in heritage language education.
