SUMMARY:Yale CLS Brown Bag Series | "The Future of Language Study is Open" with Carl Blyth
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nCompared with STEM fields\, second language (L2) education has only recently begun to embrace open education and the new knowledge ecologies it produces. L2 educators may have been hesitant to participate in the open education movement due to a lack of research which investigates the benefits and challenges of L2 learning and teaching in open environments. This talk contextualizes open education in L2 learning and teaching in terms of a dynamic ecology\, along with a discussion of how the open movement affects L2 education beyond the classroom context. Also discussed will be the new ways of creating\, adapting and curating OER for language learning. The talk ends by describing openness as a key design feature of future scholarly endeavor.\n*Please see the reading material attached to the event. \nSpeaker’s Bio \nCarl S. Blyth is Associate Professor of French Linguistics\, and Director of the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning at the University of Texas at Austin\, USA. His research interests include discourse analysis\, intercultural pragmatics and language learning technology. \nRequired Registration \nhttps://cglink.me/2dA/r2192333

SUMMARY:Invited Guest Speaker Presentation | Breathing Through Both Nostrils: Introducing Yiddish in the German Classroom
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to bring Yiddish and German closer\, graduate students at Columbia University organized two workshops to foster collaboration between the languages and to conduct a sample lesson. This session will highlight the first programmatic steps taken to 1) overcome the isolation of Yiddish within the Germanic department; 2) explore how Yiddish could be integrated into the Germanic language classroom\, and vice versa; 3) create resources and strategies for co-teaching languages that hold close cultural and linguistic ties; 4) evaluate future implications of this interlinguistic collaboration and reimagine the future language classroom. The steps will provide the springboard for discussion and generating further ideas. Participants will receive materials to adapt for their own use.
