DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Association for Language Learning Technology (www.neallt.org) will hold its annual conference online on Saturday\, April 6. The NEALLT’ 24 virtual conference will be hosted by the Columbia University Language Resource Center. \nThis year’s theme is: Writing Innovations in the Language Classroom \nWriting has been a perennial challenge in the foreign language classroom\, a challenge that has only been accentuated by the emergence of digital tools such as online translators and generative AI. SUMMARY:Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning: 2024 Annual Workshop | Proposals Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Today\, is the last day to submit your proposals for the 2024 Annual Workshop with the The Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning (CLTL). The CLTL (http://www.languageconsortium.org/) is inviting proposals for a workshop on language pedagogy to be held during the Fall of 2024 on one of its member campuses. The CLTL offers funding of up to $7\,500 to support the workshop. Additional funding may be available depending on the nature and scope of the proposal. \nThe first workshop in this series was held at Brown University in October 2013: “Working at the Intersection of Language and Culture in the Digital Age: Practical Approaches to the Pedagogy of Cultural Learning”. The second\, entitled “Language Learning and Teaching with Urban and Linguistic Landscapes”\, was held at Columbia University in October 2016. The third was held at Columbia University in October 2018 and the theme was “Working at the Intersection of Language and Culture in the Digital Age: Social Network Approaches (SNA) to the Pedagogy of Language Teaching”. The fourth took place at Yale University in October 2019 and focused on Project-Based Language Teaching and Learning. Brown University held “Meaning Through Sound: Rediscovering Listening in the Language Classroom” in 2021. Cornell University hosted this event in October 2022\, entitled “Connecting Language Teaching and Social Justice: A Call for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion”. The latest workshop was held at Princeton University – “Current and Future Trends in AI: Practical Applications to Language Teaching and Assessment.” \nProposals must be submitted by a member of the language faculty of one of the member institutions (Brown\, Chicago\, Columbia\, Cornell\, Harvard\, MIT\, Princeton\, or Yale). Proposing teams must coordinate with the Consortium representative on their respective campuses to ensure compliance with the guidelines below. Consortium representatives must approve the submission by their institution. Note that costs are reimbursed by the Consortium post-event; ensure that you have a funding source able to defray initial expenses prior to reimbursement (typically one to two weeks after submission of the expense report). \nThe proposed workshop should be one or one-and-one-half days in length and either: \n\nfocus on a pedagogical issue across languages (for example\, assessment; project-based learning; use of technology; heritage learning\, etc.)\n\nor \n\nfocus on a pedagogical issue pertaining to a specific language and involving faculty from two or more Consortium Institutions.\n\nWhile both types of proposals are encouraged\, preference will be given to proposals that actively involve language faculty from multiple institutions\, target multiple languages\, or reflect ongoing or proposed collaborative activities across two or more institutions. Since these events are envisioned as faculty workshops\, there is an expectation of significant active involvement or hands-on work by the participants. The funding is not intended for lectures\, conferences\, or symposia\, although a workshop might feature an invited speaker to provide a broader theoretical context for the event. Individual or\npanel presentations should not form the preponderance of workshop activities. \nCLTL funding can be used to: \n\ncover costs to host a speaker and/or multiple presenters (including travel and lodging)\npay for materials\ndefray costs of refreshments\, meals and room rental\nsupport interpretation and other affordances for participants requiring accommodation\n\nYour proposal should: \n\nbe three to five pages long\, double-spaced (proposals that exceed the required length will not\nbe considered)\nprovide a detailed and convincing rationale that identifies the topic and its relevance to current pedagogical and theoretical issues\ninclude a detailed schedule for the workshop\, including proposed speakers\, activities\, and topics\nhave a significant hands-on focus\, allowing participants to actively engage with the topic\ninclude a brief bio of each of the organizers\nattach a detailed line-item budget and – when possible – bios of the proposed presenters (these are not part of the 3-5-page requirement)\ninclude plans for accessibility\, such as ASL interpretation or other affordances for audience members who require such.\n\nShould you be awarded the funding\, you must: \n\nplan and carry out all aspects of the workshop\nkeep track of all expenses to be reimbursed\, and submit your receipts to the Consortium\nwrite a short report summarizing the workshop\ncarry out an evaluation of the workshop and attach completed evaluations to your report\npost this report or any papers or talks from the workshop on the CLTL webpage\n\nEach campus can submit up to 3 proposals. Interested candidates are urged to consult with their campus CLTL representatives before and during the writing process. \nThe CLTL board will select one proposal to fund from the pool of proposals submitted. Deadline for submission of proposals is April 1\, 2024. Please submit your proposal to the Consortium representative on your campus: \nBrown University: Jane Sokolosky (Jane_Sokolosky@brown.edu)\nColumbia University: Stéphane Charitos (sc758@columbia.edu)\nCornell University: Angelika Kraemer (akraemer@cornell.edu)\nPrinceton University: James Rankin (jrankin@princeton.edu)\nUniversity of Chicago: Cathy Baumann (ccbauman@uchicago.edu)\nHarvard University: Mary DiSalvo (disalvo@fas.harvard.edu)\nYale University: Fernando Rubio (fernando.rubio@yale.edu)\nMIT: Per Urlaub (urlaub@mit.edu)
