SUMMARY:LRC Instructional Innovation Grant Presentation: Ling Yan and Yike Li\, EALAC
DESCRIPTION:**Please note: this event was originally scheduled for Wed. April 24th\, and has been rescheduled for Friday\, April 26th. \nPlease join us for an LRC Instructional Innovation Grant Presentation\, Gra by Dr. Ling Yan and Yike Li\, from EALAC. For a description of the project\, please read the following: \n“Chinese is a tonal language\, which means that the tone in which syllables in a word are pronounced can change that word’s meaning. There are four main tones in Mandarin Chinese\, as well as a neutral tone\, which is used for some syllables. One of the main difficulties in learning Chinese tones is the fact that they are used to distinguish between similar-sounding words. For example\, the word “ma” can mean “mother\,” “horse\,” “hemp\,” or “scold\,” depending on the tone used and character chosen. This can be confusing for learners who are used to relying on other cues\, such as word order or context\, to determine meaning. Another challenge is that the tones themselves can be difficult to produce correctly. Learners may not be accustomed to using their voices in precise ways at the lexical level\, which can result in miscommunication or difficulty being understood. This project provides students with instructions on how to pronounce Chinese syllables which consist of tones\, initials (the initial consonant)\, and finals (the vowel or diphthong that follows the initial) through visual and audio demonstrations in video clips. By using clear\, real-life examples and step-by-step explanations\, the video clips are easy to follow and understand.”

SUMMARY:Annual Symposium Consortium Workshop for Language Teaching and Learning Day I
DESCRIPTION:The Language Resource Center is pleased to announce that Columbia will be hosting the 2024 Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning Symposium\, titled “Language and Climate: Making Connections for a Sustainable Future.” \nThe symposium\, to be held on May 3-4 in the historic Riverside Church\, aspires to explore the intersection between climate and language study and examine the ideological assumptions that shape the relationship between the natural world and the language used to speak about it. \nThis year’s symposium brings together a diverse group of scholars\, activists\, and educators to discuss how language shapes our understanding of and responses to climate change. It promises to be a stimulating two days of talks\, workshops\, and discussions aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the role language plays in environmental discourse and action. \nAttendance at the symposium is limited. We strongly urge you to register by April 5th\, 2024\, which is the end of the early registration period for Consortium faculty and staff.  After that date\, any remaining seats will be offered to faculty outside the schools that make up the Consortium. \nFor more information about the symposium and to register\, please visit our event page: Language and Climate: Making Connections for a Sustainable Future. \nJoin us in exploring the critical role of language in addressing the global challenge of climate change. We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking event.
