Columbia LRC Distance Language Pedagogy Seminar

This four-session training sequence is meant for anyone teaching a language at Columbia this summer using Zoom, or any Columbia language teacher who wishes to systematize their knowledge of language pedagogy in the distance format.

Meetings will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 12 – May 21. Each session will consist of presentations from 11am-12pm, and hands-on workshops/discussions from 3-4pm.

Mock Teaching

Do you want to practice with Zoom? A member of the LRC staff can join your Zoom meeting as a “student,” giving you the opportunity to practice a specific lesson idea or just the basics before you do it in class.

Distance Learning Pedagogies Workshops

Every Thursday at 4pm, the LRC conducts workshops focused on specific aspects of language teaching via distance. Past workshops have included:

• Quickly Transitioning to Teaching via Zoom

• The Zoom Whiteboard and Annotation Features
• Practicing with Breakout Rooms
• Using the Canvas Quizzes Feature
• Lesson Planning and the Move to Pass/Fail
• Using Pear Deck in Language Classes
• Student-Centered Pedagogy in Distance Language Classes
