L1 and L2 Writing Identity: Self-Perceptions and Motivation in the World Language Classroom
April 10 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

How do students’ “mental pictures” of their own writing affect their self-assessments? Dr. Marina Tsylina and John Prado share findings from a study of L2 Russian learners that examines how learners evaluate their own writing from various perspectives and across several distinct criteria. By comparing these perceptions across their native and target languages, the study reveals how learners’ internal benchmarks can shift depending on the lens they use.
This session bridges these findings with a collaborative discussion on pedagogical implications for all world language classrooms. We invite you to bring your own classroom experiences and perspectives as we explore practical strategies for fostering accurate self-assessment and helping students bridge their L1 and L2 writing identities for more confident, motivated development.
