Language Program Presentation | Addressing Diversity, Intersectionality, and Social Justice in the Polish-Language Classroom

February 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EST

This presentation reports on the results of our 2022 LRC Instructional Innovation Grant “Addressing Diversity, Intersectionality, and Social Justice in the Polish-Language Classroom”. A review of images and vocabulary of diversity in five currently available Polish-language textbooks is presented, with an eye to highlighting and elucidating underlying operative assumptions and ideologies about race, gender, class, ethnicity, and disability in them. In light of these findings, the talk will discuss the logistic, ethical, and cultural challenges US-based Polish-language instructors face in introducing more inclusive and equitable vocabularies into their classrooms. Finally, the presenters will speculate as to the potential role LCTLs such as Polish might play in contributing to the global conversation about diversity and intersectionality.
